DIY glitter oxfords

'Late to the party' is a phrase that adequately describes much of my life. I didn't start school until I was 15; I got my provisional driver's licence at 19; and I only just bought my first car last week.

In this context, 'late to the party' refers to the fact that I'm most certainly - albeit unabashedly - the last on board with glitter-encrusted shoes. Not that I ever wasn't a fan, but it never occurred to me that I could simply make my own pair rather than lusting at Miu Miu's $500 offerings on net-a-porter.com.

Rather than clog the interwebz with my own instructions, I'll link you to the ones that were most useful to me. I just used cheap craft glue and a spatula since I didn't have fabric glue or a paint brush and it seemed to turn out just fine.

As I write this, my fingers are dripping with a sparkly soup of glitz and glue. I've always been a mess when it comes to crafts, ever since that time mum said I could do finger painting and I took that to mean I could finger paint the walls, too. (I was three; cut me some slack.) Given my poor track record with crafts, I think if you think mine is half-decent, I'm sure you could do a much better job. It's a high reward-to-effort ratio - my favourite kind of craft!

The claws of the frosty winter, the colour of the Alley Cat, the warmth of my best friends' limbs all knotted together on the couch on a Friday night: they're home to my heart. Even Denver International Airport bears a sense of comfort for me as the final pitstop before I'm back in Fort Collins.

It's good to be home. In but a few days I'll be covering New York Fashion Week for Pocketto magazine and Catchlight Media and I can't wait to share the experience with you!

As summer approached, we all re-considered the benefits of itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikinis, and for good reason: just look at these!

2. A visual guide to the evolution of my hair
One repercussion I didn't consider when I dyed my hair pink in 2009 was that my hair would become some sort of bizarre underground Tumblr/We Heart It sensation. Even when it was back to blonde in 2011, those kids lapped it up. And to that I say, um, it really isn't that cool. Both myself and my hairdresser think my hair is kind of gross, actually. But each to their own. I'm getting what some might call a makeover on Saturday, so I'm enjoying what it is while it lasts.

My favourite part about this post was the hark back to New Year's Day, 2011, in New York City. I'll use any excuse to reference that town, and it appears you didn't mind that either.

Free People's Australian launch went off with a bang, and I was thrilled to preview a very cool pouch belt in my new joint a little way out of Adelaide.

6. That gorgeous Casper & Pearl floral headband
Local girl Stacey Hendrickson, better known as the designer behind Casper & Pearl, has been generating a bit of hype this year, and this headband is one of her designs I've been wearing all year around.

7. Mimco x Not So Naked photoshoot
I'm privileged to have created photoshoots for Mimco twice, and when they sent me this bag from their new collection, I pulled together a model test with 60's inspired styling in the heart of Adelaide.

8. The first of many collaborations with Claire Alice Young
This photoshoot was a definitive moment for me, and I will be ever grateful to have gotten to know Claire this year. At the time, it was some of my proudest work, and I'm glad you appreciated it too.

Life is picnics

I get it already, you say as you idly browse what must be at least the fourth post in the last six months filled with picnic photos. You like picnics. Whatever.

Do I sense the bitter undertones of jealousy? Yes, yes I believe I do. Because you so wish you were so recklessly blessed with the bounty of wonderful individuals I am grateful to call friends.

Because when my family was nowhere to be found, my friends had dinner on the balcony on Christmas day. And when life was idyllic, we celebrated as one on a hill overlooking the city. Life undulates, but picnics remain the same.

My sister lives by this saying, life is people. If so, then I wouldn't have a life without picnics.

New label Geisker sent me a beautifully crafted Italian shirt and cufflinks set to try, and I was pretty stoked to own a shirt with French cuffs, since it can be difficult to find a well-cut women's shirt. Apart the fact that I had no chance to iron it before I wore it, I couldn't fault it - if you're looking for an affordable, high quality work garments, Geisker's online store is well worth a look. Note that the sizing runs a little large so you'll want to size down if you're between sizes.

This is what I want you to wear, you said. You always knew exactly what you wanted.

I took in the purple dress and corduroy trousers and nodded vigorously.

But what if they don't have it in the store by then? I screwed up my little nose and silently approved of my forward thinking.

We can buy it now just in case!

But you were seven, and I was six, and Pumpkin Patch might as well have been Prada. We determined to save.

And then you moved to Germany, just like that. What's a ten-year-old to do when her best friend is on the other side of the world? I cried.

About three years later, you moved back, and your mind was fertile with life and ideas and initiative. I was naive, home-schooled, sheltered. You had boyfriends, and I couldn't relate. They were scary.

Seven years on, and we caught up for coffee. I found out you would be marrying a boy. The Boy we had spent hours dreaming about. As little girls we had talked about what he would look like, how he would dress, where you would live, how many kids you wanted.

Three days ago, I stood in a paddock next to your house and watched a ceremony that confirmed the death of our childhoods.

I sat on the very seat where we planned the event fourteen years ago. I stood on the steps where you told me about Sex and I thought you were telling me an extravagant fib. (That's disgusting! Nobody would ever do that.) The trampoline where you taught me about French kissing is gone.

Watching you marry Boy was just as heartbreaking as it was beautiful. I didn't mean to become an adult. I didn't mean to leave those dreams behind. I didn't mean to let titles body paperwork degrees busy taken jealous facebook mine woman money cool leaving define me.

I'M SUCH A POSER LOLZ SK8ING ROX.

Not really. In my defence, I was legitimately about to go for a cruise when I took these images as I had bought the board the day before and was (am) fairly obsessed with it. Even the most perfunctory skater will see that it's a terrible board, though - I can't deny it needs an upgrade.

Sportscraft gave me the chance to try some of their goods at the freshly opened Burnside Village store, and when I finally made my way there I was certainly impressed. (In a somewhat ironic twist, I wasn't able to make it to the Zara press hour, despite being the first to break the news the Spanish bastion of sweatshops was on its way.) The Village has always been one of my favourite shopping centres in Adelaide, and I can happily say that position in my mind has only improved since its renovations.

Proud to be a CSU ram

(It's ok to wear college tees after you've finished college, right? Because this has recently become my go-to outfit when I'm not toddling around in heels as high as they are long.)

What I'm really here to tell you about is Matt Corby's incredible secret garden gig in Stirling on the weekend. It was an evening of home-made pumpkin pie, friends old and new, and gorgeous tunes floating through a country garden speckled with daisies and hidden tunnels.

By now you would at least have heard his biggest radio hit so far, Brother, and his intimate live rendition was so emotionally charged, it made my heart ache to listen to it. Though everybody knew the words, nobody sung along. It was as if uttering his lyrics would be stepping too close to his heart, or insolently poking something tender in his soul. It would have been stealing something that was his alone.

That's how the relatively short set proceeded, with the crowd biting their lips and breathing shallow breaths so as not to disturb the atmosphere while Matt performed what was beyond question the best gig I've ever been to. (And I go to gigs at least every fortnight, so that's saying something.)

And on his dude-babin', I need not expatiate. Let's just say my standards in men went through the roof after standing within half a meter of Zeus himself.

Did a quick test with new face Helen not too long ago, and was very pleased with the results. I didn't have my favourite lens (Canon 28mm f/1.8 USM) with me on the day and had to make do with my $135 (spare change in the photography world) 50mm f/1.8, but that goes to show you don't always need a flashy kit for good images. Hell, I checked on eBay the other day and my camera is going for as little as $300.

Exclusive: Sportscraft summer campaign

To celebrate the opening of Sportscraft's new store in Burnside Village, Not So Naked has the first look for a few images from the brand's gorgeous spring/summer campaign. The images carry a Michael Kors vibe: laid-back, confident charm. I have my eye on those emerald trousers - on my baby legs they'll sit just above my ankles, the perfect 7/8 crop length.

I won't be able to attend the media launch of Zara at the new Village on Thursday but I will be dropping by the vicinity on the weekend so I'm much looking forward to checking out all the new stores!

(My last job as a journalist was at a children's show, so the dress code was lax to say the least.) To be honest, I'm winging it to some extent, although frankly my conservative is the layman's extreme, so I'm not sure how that's working out.

Not a bum bag

As I roamed the streets of yet another unfamiliar town, I realised today that this is the fourth town/city I've lived in in as many years. Yes, in my absence I've been on the move, and life is fragrant with opportunity. And while I'm still staunchly Adelaide-based, I'm working full-time in a function-not-form town about an hour out of the hills.

Onwards, to outfit analysis: Free People recently gave me the opportunity to be one of the first to experience their online store in Australia, since they have recently launched shipping here, and will soon be offering a month of free shipping to Australia! (This was especially exciting for me, since Free People was one of my favourite places to shop in the US.) I used a voucher they gave me to order this unique pouch belt (perfect for nights out when all I need is my keys, dosh, and attitude) and the hyped Maurie & Eve Phoenix wedges, which I haven't had the opportunity to wear yet but am busting to break out of the box.

I love the way this belt shamelessly acknowledges the handiness of the abhorrent bum bag, and rips off the concept to make it edgy. This one's sold out, but there are plenty more in really gorgeous designs.

I went to school with Doran, and I remember I was in Year 12 when my sister and I first caught him sending sneaky texts to his love interest Mel. He blushed and smiled self-consciously, swift to ensure that the secret remained between us. Months later, they were going steady. A couple of weeks ago, on a Thursday night after Mel finished work, he popped the question. I couldn't be more happy for them.

So on the weekend, when Scott (the bearded half of White Wall Photography), Claire and I needed models for a shoot, D & M were the first ones I asked. These are just my photos from the afternoon, but there are plenty more on our respective Facebook pages. Claire also shot a gorgeous video, which you can watch below.

When I meet Alyce Cowell, she's puffed. It's been an early morning, and one flight and three interviews later, the flight of stairs to the first level of Westfield West Lakes was pushing her limits. The tall, blonde stylist who rose above hundreds of bloggers and even appeared on A Current Affair to become the Westfield Insider is human after all.

It reminded me of the way I tend to approach shopping centres: flustered, time-poor, and on a mission. I'm not a leisurely shopper. Give me what I want. In one place. Now. (Can you see why Westfield centres suit me perfectly?)

I described to Alyce the look I was searching for: a bright short suit, seen at Marnie Skillings and Stolen Girlfriends Club at RAFW this year. Her reaction reflected her endearing enthusiasm for high street fashion: 'I have one from Dotti! It would have been perfect!' Endearing, because while most stylists would dismiss the chain stores, Alyce knows what it's like to shop on a student's income, having recently graduated with a bachelor of journalism.

Before long we're off, and our mission is to buy an entire outfit on a $200 gift card (disclaimer: provided by Westfield). Despite being stopped a couple of times by people who recognised Alyce, and running into local designer Kayla Bath, we managed to grab everything in just over an hour. Say what you want, but everybody needs clothes fast and cheap once in a while - for me that's usually when I've forgotten to do the washing and I need a dress for the wedding tomorrow. And that's what Westfield is all about.

If you haven't worked out yet, I've been spending quite a bit of time with Claire (you bitches should be on first name basis by now) recently. This is beneficial to the both of us because it gives her the impression that she has friends, and it also looks good for me to be hanging around someone as pretty as she is. Win-win, really.

Adelaide is just as much as city of abandoned buildings as it is a city of churches. Not the hostile kind of abandoned buildings so commonplace in Hollywood. Our city centre is populated with gentle, elderly buildings, left to wither in their harsh fortune of desertion. I think these huts of misery deserve a chance to be rediscovered, and I've set out to find them.

Most of them are reminiscent of 12 Grimmauld Place, the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. You won't find them unless you're looking. So Claire and I, we stomped up stairwells and slithered up corrugated iron rooftops. We held our noses at the stench and dust and debris and of a department store relinquished since 1987. Babies' toys, underwear, beer bottles. There was once life here. Pigeon faeces. Now there isn't.

It's my hope that as movements like fourwords, Renew Adelaide, and 5000+ gain momentum, we'll be able to wipe the filthy tears of our old buildings and at least reupholster them as functioning arts venues if nothing else. Adelaide, we need them.

Hype on Lookbook

On Saturday night I took photos at a reader called Olivia's 21st. Everyone there was Italian and related and they stood really close and touched my arms when they talked and held my hands and kissed me hello and goodbye, and didn't let go until they had finished talking, as if they were scared they'd never again get the chance to explore the recesses in my fingers and wrinkles and joints. And as somebody's Nonna leaned in so close I could smell the sweetness in her years, I thought, I could fit right in here.

Perhaps I'm actually Italian, estranged at birth from my family of extravagantly expressive people, these effervescent people, a fountain of language and emotion.

Perhaps my Italian-ness is the root cause of the punctilious manner in which I select my baristas, silently measuring the crema in their espressos and appraising their quality. It mustn't be too hot, or it will burn. The grind has to be the right consistency, not too coarse so that the richness of the espresso is lost and becomes a puddle of black water. And the soy, that dastardly make-or-break that proves so difficult to achieve. A barista that scorches the soy milk has ruined the drink and should proceed to get a job elsewhere.

Yes; I think I'm actually Italian.

They say you're influenced by the environment you place yourself in. Well, by the end of the weekend, I left The Eclective wedding expo looking like a hippie bride. I even had a daisy bouquet! I functioned as a model for Erdelyi Hair and Body, who did a terrific job on my hair and makeup, using airbrush foundation. Being airbrushed was quite a bizarre feeling. I imagine that's what a wall might have felt like in the process of being tagged.

(Isn't this lipstick just the perfect shade of red? It's by a brand called Besame, which I'd never heard of before since it's pretty difficult to come by. This shade is Carmine, available online from Gemma Vendetta.)

Reasons you should be friends with a photographer

Everybody needs a new profile picture sometimes. Nobody admits it. I mean, taking 'one for Myspace lol' is just so passe. So you tell everyone you need pictures together to frame in your room. Whatever. Do normal people (photographers aren't normal) even print photos anymore? You're not fooling anyone. We all know your Facebook picture hasn't changed in months. But invite a photographer friend (photografriend) out on those nights you have your swag on and you know you won't have to prod them for photos. It just happens.
When it comes to pimples, Photoshop will always beat makeup. Because you're worth it.
They'd love to photograph your wedding/21st/cousin's dog's birthday breakfast for free. The bare minimum for any photographer worth your while is $50 an hour...think about how much money you're saving by just repaying them in affection and camaraderie!
It makes you look cool. Your photografriends are probably cooler than you. They probably have beards and tattoos and listen to their extensive 70's vinyl collection while drinking chai lattes made by a barista called Jean-Paul. And if they're not Asian, they've definitely studied art.
Get close enough and you can be their plus one. Ever seen a media pass? It's that thing that lets photographers in where you can't go. And sometimes - not often - but sometimes, for the fun stuff like gigs and festivals, photographers are allowed to bring an 'assistant'. You know assistants. They're the ones that stand looking bored around 90% of the time, making everyone else wonder what their purpose is.
It saves a lot of time when you're a fashion blogger. None of this tripod and remote business, just say the word and you'll have photos for your blog in an instant. Don't forget to remind your photografriend that they've been meaning to take more photos for some time and that this will help move them out of their creative rut. Win-win!

I know exactly what my engagement ring will look like (1930's sapphire set in rose gold), what I'm going to wear (this Reem Acra S/S 2008 gown - here I must clarify that I decided on it before it was on Gossip Girl) and who my marriage celebrant will be.

That's pretty impressive for someone who believes in love like she believes in Disneyland: it's dreamy and wonderful and fun to experience for a while, but one day you have to wake up and realise that it doesn't actually exist in real life. That said, I'm not anti-love. Would I ever fall in love? Probably not, to be honest. I'd probably get married if I did, in spite of my belief that marriage is entirely irrelevant. But that doesn't mean I can't wish to be beautiful and wear white and have an excuse to throw a spectacular party, does it?

What I'm getting to is that I spent the weekend working for White Wall Photography (go look at their photos; you won't regret it!) at The Eclective, a wedding expo for creative couples who lean towards the non-traditional. It was incredibly visually inspirational, and of course loads of fun to spend a few days slogging it out with fellow creatives.

Some months ago, a French magazine commissioned me to write an article on the Royal wedding to accompany Adelaide-raised, London-based fashion photographer Leah McQueen's beautiful images. They never ended up being published and I finally have permission to share it with you all.

‘Forbetter, for worse, for richer, for poorer,’ takes on a whole new meaning whenyou’re marrying into the British monarchy. The world has been swept away by theCinderella story of the Prince and his bride – so much so that electricityconsumption in Canada and the UK saw a plunge during key moments in the livebroadcast.

Comparedwith the lavish galas of centuries past, Prince William and Catherine’s weddingwas a miserly affair. The pair’s twowedding cakes might seem Lucullian to some, but William’s parents, Charles andDiana, had 27 at their wedding – with backup cakes made in case anything wentwrong. Even in the post-war frugality of 1947, the wedding of Queen ElizabethII and Prince Philip had 12 cakes, with the official one standing 2.5 metreshigh.

It allseems a little out of place in a post-modern world. You get the feeling theroyal family doesn’t quite know where they stand anymore. Pomp and circumstanceare no longer welcome, regality a quaint sideshow in an unsettled world on theedge of war. The Middle East is one enormous killing field; Africa is starving;America is enslaved in greed.

But perhapsthat’s why so many of us are so quick to embrace this romantic remnant of dayspast. Love in its unadulterated form is so rare that when it does appear, theworld is captivated like a little girl with a butterfly. Estimates of globalviewers of the live broadcast on April 29 are as high as two billion people,despite the obstinately anti-monarchist sector of society that avoided all talkof such cavalier frivolity.

Andavoiding it would have been far from easy: everything from Princess Beatrice’shat to Pippa Middleton’s rear end dominated global conversation.

Indeed, even for those steeped in cynicism, it would have been difficult not to gasp at Catherine’s beauty in her Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen gown, with its intricate lacework and 2.7 metre train. Her sister and maid of honour, Pippa, wore a slim-fitting column gown by the same designer, which flattered her curves so well that she was swiftly dubbed ‘Her Royal Hotness’ by many.

The Queen’s granddaughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, nearly stole the spotlight with their whimsical Phillip Treacy millinery, which caused a stir among the self-appointed ‘fashion police’ of the tabloids. Beatrice’s taupe bow-shaped hat even gathered comparisons to a pair of ovaries, comparisons which she shrugged off with grace.

Unlike his cousins’ idiosyncratic style, William’s wedding remained strictly within the realms of tradition. And even with a million well-wishers gathered on the streets of London, 5,000 police, and 1,900 invited guests, the wedding could not have run more smoothly.

A few days later, the world woke up to news of Osama bin Laden’s death. The girl married her prince and the bad guy was killed. Perhaps, suggested a friend, the week had been sponsored by Disney.

Adelaide is stirring from its winter slumber, and I'm starting to feel the unparalleled bliss of summer, which isn't unlike that of having a loved one back in your life after months of heartache. I'm experiencing my city with new eyes. Hopping fences by night and building campfires on estates in the hills, ready to bolt at the slightest harbinger of a scolding; being smothered in sunlight alongside my closest friends at weekend barbecues; approaching every morning with a smile and a generous spirit.

I like snapping events till the wee hours every Saturday, but I love having a cuppa as I paint my nails and edit the visual evidence of the week gone by. I like being busy with work, friends, dinners and parties. But I love lying in the sun, letting my eyes lazily amble across the pages of the Weekend Australian that lies across my legs like a blanket.

Behind the scenes at Adelaide Hills Magazine

A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of spending a day assisting on a shoot with Daniel Noone for Adelaide Hills Magazine. I love meeting people that are full of life, direction, and creativity, and so it was great to work with editor-in-Chief Mikyla Gilbert, who is a free-spirited visionary, and brilliant at what she does. It's a fascinating read even for those who don't live in the Hills (which explains why it sells so well interstate too).

And I've met a few of you here and there shooting parties around Adelaide - thought I'd include a couple of shots from the Attitude launch, where I got to meet long-time blog crushes Lana and Jacquie. You'll love their blogs, promise.

Finally, here's something else I should have posted months ago: the features I shot for another fabulous local mag, Attitude, edited by the ah-mah-zing Selena (click through to see behind-the-scenes shots from the mag editorial). It's the best stress press going round, and for those of you over the border you can read it online.

It's that wonderful time of year when designers are starting to send out their spring/summer lookbooks and I thought I'd share with you a few of my absolute favourite pieces.

If you haven't already experienced the hype surrounding The IOU Project, well, allow me to attack you with a decent amount of excess hype. If American Apparel were a skanky teenager with a lot of good ideas, The IOU Project is that teenager all grown up. It's all about sustainable, ethical fashion at reasonable price points. (Their bright chinos have found a home on my birthday wishlist.)

And while we're appreciating all things fresh for spring, it's interesting to note the new direction that Bonds are taking with their spring/summer campaign featuring Rachael Taylor. I mentioned on Twitter that Bonds had sent me a couple of pairs (both in the video) that felt substantially more upmarket than their usual offerings. They're trying to reach the ladies who like a little luxury underneath - and let me tell you, it's worked for me. I wore the new undies to a job interview and have never felt more confident. (I mean, that's just the done thing, right? Nobody goes to an interview without fresh undies! #ormaybeitsjustme)

On watermarking blog images

It's been a couple of years since I've started blogging, and since then I've found my images everywhere from porn sites (I'm as confused as you are) to random people's Facebook profile pictures. The staggering popularity of Tumblr and We Heart It has spread my images to the ends of the earth, but those sites do more damage to photographers than good because of their lax policies on breaches of copyright. People advised me to get a watermark, but I ummed and ahhed for months. Style over practicality, I thought. (Because the truth is that most watermarks look terrible and detract hugely from the image.)

But I finally got myself sorted and made one. It's far from perfect, but at least it isn't fugly.

Winter in the Adelaide hills

What makes a good photo? Losing your phone in the hills and going back to scour the dirt for it after a night of heavy rain, and bringing your camera. Being attacked by acquaintances in Victor Harbor for no apparent reason, running up a hill for refuge, and bringing your camera. Falling over at a shoot so many times that it hurts to sit down, but taking photos anyway. Disciplined habits will always take you further than talent.

Youtube is largely a cesspool of lacklustre procrastinatory tools that serve little more than to take up space in the world wide web. It takes something quite extraordinary to get me to spend precious time watching strangers on the internet. So trust me when I say Kym Miaco is one such extraordinary young thing. The 16-year-old local with a voice destined for greatness is already a seasoned performer and songwriter, and I had the privilege of taking some new shots for her portfolio a few months ago. Have a listen to her jazzy tune The Big White City Rescued Me - it's my absolute favourite and just wonderful live.

Sun & Soul

I'm over the moon to present to you the results of a collaboration between 18-year-old photographer Claire Alice Young and myself. When she emailed me some time ago suggesting that we blend our creativities together and see what happens, I have to admit that I was fairly overwhelmed that she would want to work with me! We started with the idea of a marching band theme and went from there: I'll let the images speak for themselves. Special thanks to my friend Lucy, who isn't signed to an agency but no doubt will be soon. I'll showcase more of Claire's work soon, and I'm thrilled to say we have another collab in the works. Breo de Janeiro headphones

It's 8pm on New Year's Day 2011, and New York City is dark. Not the unsettling, moody kind of darkness. Just dark. Operations at John F Kennedy airport are running sluggishly as usual, and it takes nearly as long to wait for my luggage to come as it does to fly from Denver to Gotham. I'm not complaining, though, since I've already been delayed five days by the snowstorms. I'm overwhelmed that I actually made it, even though I did miss seeing the ball drop on New Year's Eve. All the hostels are booked out, and I don't know where I'm going to sleep that night, but I call a sorority sister and hope for the best. Soon enough, I find myself on the L train towards Brooklyn and silently admire myself for being so goddamn cool. And that's when I reach into my pocket and realise that somewhere between Denver and Manhattan, I lost my favourite earphones. Bugger. I'm only moderately cool.

Since that night, I've been through three different pairs of headphones and hated them all. Philips, too treble-y. Nokia, too soft. Skullcandy Lowriders, made me look like a stupid scene kid, sounded bloody terrible, and broke within a month. Clearly I treasure my musical experience far too highly for someone who can't afford to pay more than $100.

But these, these Breo De Janeiro headphones, which were sent to me to review, are keepers. They tick every box. Loud enough to blast over the god-awful music at Fitness First (whoever programmes the music there doesn't deserve to have ears) without blowing the speakers. Comfortable enough to wear for hours. Strong enough so that I'm not worried about keeping it in my handbag throughout the day. (My Skullcandy pair was so cheaply made that it broke when I was pulling it over my head!) Clear enough so that I can listen to everything from classical to podcasts to Crystal Castles with consistently enjoyable sound. And - here's the clincher - at $80, it's affordable enough for even the most HECS-drowned uni student.

Owning these pieces more than make up for what I missed at the Dion Lee show at RAFW. Although it's tragic that the sales at Cue mean the last of Dion Lee on the high street, it's nice that the price points have graciously dipped into my reach. Hopefully it's been successful enough to warrant further collaborations for Cue. Bianca Spender and Karla Spetic are two such Australian designers whose aesthetic visions are in keeping with Cue's. Perhaps in the future? We're allowed to dream, aren't we?

I think this can be commonly diagnosed as a Kappa problem.

As a photographer, one of the most enlightening things is you could do is to spend a bit of time on the other side of the lens and feel the burning stare of the camera. Not only does it help you understand why other people can be so stiff in front of your lens (and what to do about it), but it also gives valuable insight into the minds of other talented snappers. One of the essential things I do with my photography students is take photos of them, so that they can have the experience of crossing over to the over side - they always end up the better for it.

It's always interesting to see how another photographer would approach a scene and contrasting it with your own vision. Here are a few shots from a couple of precious young ladies I spent time with recently. Hope you're as in love with their work as I am.

Only a week has passed since I landed back in Adelaide from Sydney but it has gone so fast! (Blogger hasn't been working so sorry I haven't posted sooner.) I spent the week reporting and shooting for Adelaide Fashion Collective and basically being a sleepless zombie, but nevertheless really enjoyed my time and I can't wait to be back in Sydney in July.

Hey kids, I have a few tips for you on how to have a great birthday weekend.

1. Spend the weekend Melbourne, that backwater over the border. Sure, you might have to put up with a few Vics, but it's worth it for the sample sales in Fitzroy and $4 pizza at Lucky Coq.

2. Have macarons for the first time. It doesn't get any better than salted caramel flavour.

3. Enlist a talented friend to follow you around with a guitar to provide a soundtrack to your monumental day. Eating hot cross buns in mushroom-populated woods is that much better when jazzy melodies are pirouetting through the air.

4. Catch up with a friend you haven't seen in months. Commit the memories to film, because when your memories fail, chemistry won't.

Adelaide hills photography

Driving into the Adelaide hills is not dissimilar to stepping out of a Narnian wardrobe. One minute, you're surrounded by the familiar suburbian vista, every sign and light and billboard and plastic contortion jostling for your attention. One minute down the road, and it's all gone. Not one remnant of city life remains on the cliffs, creeks, and wild undulations of the hills, these powerful hills that seem to have a sense of omniscience about them. Into the hills we ventured, finding horses and cherry orchards and grand forests. But more than that, we found a sense of wonder with which to paint our souls.

Meet Amber and Jess, two of my photography protégées. Hopefully you'll see more of their faces - and their work - as they progress throughout the year. Hype on Lookbook

(Local blogger Stacey Hendrickson made this perfectly whimsical headband which I was fortunate enough to win not too long ago. I'm so obsessed with it that I've worn it four days in a row. That's pretty huge deal for me, since most of the time when I wear headbands, I look like a stupid 14-year-old on my way to Ice or some equally aesthetically offensive store. Not that all 14-year-olds are stupid...I just look like a stupid one.)

You'd all be aware of the crises in Japan, New Zealand and Queensland over the past few months. Yet awareness alone does precious little to help anything. I've been guilty in the past of fooling myself into thinking that a few tears shed and prayers whispered would be sufficient, but this time I'm not satisfied with that. Indebted uni student that I am, I can't afford to travel to volunteer, or donate money. Instead, I'm going to go vegan in order to save carbon emissions which are contributing to climate change, and subsequently natural disasters. Street style. Been there, done that, been on both sides of the lens. Relatively little has been brought to the table in years. But I just had to share with you part of the A/W 2011 lookbook of the burgeoning Australian high street label Toi Et Moi. Their lookbooks are always so innovative - last season they enlisted Sydney blogger Zanita Whittington to shoot and model in the campaign all by herself.

These girls were scouted on the streets of Sydney and Melbourne and were given absolute freedom to accessorise their outfits however they liked. Aren't they lovely?

The last time I wore something Hurley, I bought it years ago from Jetty Surf.* While I may be well past that terrible stage in my life, I'm still partial to the brands I followed as a teenager, and it's always interesting to see what directions the more established brands are taking. (Except you, Emily the Strange. You are only acceptable for people without eyes. Or souls.)

It wasn't long ago that Hurley let me know about their new denim range, and I'm not disappointed. The denim feels on par with any of my $300 designer jeans, and its wash is perfect. Shame on me for not having stilts for legs though...I'll need to get it hemmed. They're definitely the longest jeans I've ever worn - all you babin' tall girls, you know where to go!

(Oh, and Rimmel sent me a bunch of makeup which I've been wearing nonstop! Finally, I've found the One. The perfect red lipstick. Rimmel Moisture Renew in Rose Passion. Get on it. I've also migrated to camp Rimmel after years of using OPI...Rimmel's brushes and endurance, not to mention price tags, kick arse.)

You know when people ask 'What's new?' and you have nothing to say, because nothing's changed of late? I don't have that problem right now. Every jolly thing is new and I don't know where to start. I'm a real-life, employed journalist at a major television network now. (I was majoring in journalism with a minor in unemployment, but I guess this rescinds my minor.) I wouldn't have enough hands to juggle all the opportunities that are being offered to me right now even if I was that hyperdextrous Hindu goddess Kali.

The details of the Adelaide Fringe exhibition I'll be part of have been confirmed! (Helloooo, artist pass that gets me in shows for free.) So if you're up for some cool mixed media art by young global nomads, drop in to the UniSA student lounge between the 8th and 13th of March for My Global Experience.

Finally, I have the Wisteria wedges that had all the girls raving upon their release. And at $30 on sale at Topshop in Soho, NYC, I couldn't be happier. (Between you and me, sometimes I just hold the shoes in my arms and stare at them to make me feel better when I'm not my best. Awkward...)

And although I usually don't note the location, I'd have to be delirious not to mention this one. These photographs were from a quick shoot at my friend's house in Kuala Lumpur, where Pantene shot their recent campaign, and Dior had a party just last month. I've never seen a better view in my life.

After a relaxing 10 days with friends in Cape Town, South Africa (above), I moved on to Qatar for a day, and I'm now in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where the culture is diverse, the curry is scorching, and showering twice a day is de rigueur.

The 12 short hours I spent frolicking around Doha, Qatar (below), were among the most bizarre in my life. I was hit on by the Kuwaiti soccer team twice, inadvertently gatecrashed a five-star hotel's private beach (and made good use of it), and ate turkish delight on what felt like the set of Aladdin. I've never felt more out of place in my life, among the locals in their head-to-toe dresses: white for the men, black for the women. They looked rather like chess pieces.

Monday marks my first breath of Australian air since August, and I'm counting down the hours. I hope you've been enjoying my photography from around the world - only Malaysia and Singapore to go now. Adelaide kids, some of these images will be featured in a Fringe exhibition this year, and I'll let you know the details soon.

Cut from one week to two days because of the blizzards, my New York City trip had to be kept touristy, which is something I hate, but it is nonetheless a wonderful place. NYC is a little like coffee. The first time you experience it, you think it makes you look cultured and smooth. After a little while, you realise it doesn't make you anything special. It's habit-forming, expensive, and it's been done to death. But by then, you're already addicted.

O, Canada, I think I'm in love with you

Last weekend found me in the beautiful city of Vancouver to see Brooke Fraser. This was the third time I've seen her live, but her performances are never stale or overly rehearsed. With an entirely new band and set thanks to her brilliant new album Flags, her adorable chattiness and smooth vocals had the crowd in the palm of her hand. While I couldn't bring my camera to the show, I thought I'd share a few images from Vancouver (and the last one from Seattle). Thank you Canada for being amazing! I will definitely be back.

In my town there is magic. It lives in the dust on the shelves of the independent bookstores, in the elusive glory of the creatures of the mountains, and in that opaque yet palpable aura folks like to call Christmas cheer. Sometimes, it is so gracious as to hover long enough for me to capture a comparatively dull expression of it with my lens. Sometimes, I feel the hand of beauty reaching for mine, compelling me to discover and inviting me to gaze in awe. And in those moments, I know I'll never grow up.

My first Thanksgiving

A quick trip to Denver's Cherry Creek shopping centre this morning resulted in the haul of my life from Urban Outfitters: 11 things for $100. One of the (four!) pairs of shoes I bought was just 5 cents. Dear Australia, this is the wonder of North America's annual Black Friday sale. (Yes, it unfortunately shares its name with Victoria's Black Friday fires. I feel somewhat irreverent in rejoicing in the homonymous sale...)

Yesterday marked my first Thanksgiving celebration, which I spent with my roommate's family in Colorado Springs. I still don't completely understand what it's all about, though, since the majority of the day involves eating and none of it involves acknowledging the indigenous ownership of the land. Nevertheless, it was all kinds of yumminess.

I'm plagued with indecision. You'd think getting dressed would be easier when most of your clothes are thousands of kilometres away, but alas, it takes just as long when you're dressing out of a suitcase. I've developed a vague system beginning with the dress, moving on to shoes, then jacket, then accessories. As you can see, those are the only pairs of heels I have here! (I'm learning to deal...when I get home to my display cabinet full of heels I will smother it in cuddles and kisses.)

Feather cape + Backless dress

This dress, sent by Zanerobe, is one of those ones that is the perfect not-too-tight, not-too-baggy cut. They're hard to find at the moment, what with the high street's perpetual obsession with bodycon. It's sexy without trying too hard. Sure, it's simple, but in more of an unaffected way than any.

And all that only serves to make it a natural partner for my new obsession, the Asos feather cape. (It came three weeks late, but I'm looking past that.) It sold out in black, but for $20, you won't hear any complaints from me about the grey. (I would have preferred not to pair it with the Tristan Blair shoes, but I literally have two pairs of heels here. Ugh.)

All Hallow's Eve

I don't usually endorse the celebration of Halloween in Australia, so this was all completely new to me. Call it rebellion against American social hegemony, if you will. (On a related note, it was shocking how many Americans were oblivious to the fact that Halloween, Thanksgiving and Independence Day are unique to the US.)

When American students do Halloween, they go all out. Halloween lasts Thursday to Sunday night, with pre-gaming on Wednesday night. Most people have different costumes every night, and in accordance with Cady's famous words on Mean Girls, most parties were total slut-fests. (Let's just say my costumes were conservative in comparison with plenty of others.)

I didn't want to buy anything new so I worked with what I had. Thursday night (or round 1, as we call it) found me as an American Apparel model, but it seems I wasn't smart enough to take half decent photos. On Friday, I was Miley Cyrus in her 'Can't Be Tamed' video, mostly because I just wanted to wear feathers and nobody here knows who Lily Allen is. The next night I took five buses to Denver to see Two Door Cinema Club and review it for the magazine I'm working for here. It was a bloody good show! I had to go by myself and stay at a hostel because nobody has ever heard of them here, but at least I was at the very front.

What I want to know is what my North American readers dressed up! Do tell.

Having experienced the coldest four days of my life this week, I am beginning to lose faith in lookbook. There is no way in hell that these tiny Swedish girls can wear a trench coat, stockings and boots in the snow and not be walking icicles. (Unless, perhaps, they're perpetually drunk on mulled wine?) Four layers of clothing seems thin as tissue paper against the winter winds and sleet of the northern hemisphere. And by winds, I mean gales. I wasn't surprised when I saw a squirrel literally flying across footpath, picked up by the wind only to have an unfortunate mid-air collision with a tree.

I always swore I'd never wear a puffy jacket, but I fear this winter will induce me to break my oath. Until then, I'm enjoying the last of the sun for the season.

Before Zanerobe sent me these Holy Moly shorts, I had no idea they did such great denim (or that their shorts came with such cute hankies). There's also a beautifully cut slouchy 'Zippora' dress I'll have in a post for you soon. I can see these lasting a long time - Zanerobe is back on my radar for sure.

Although denim shorts are ubiquitous back in Australia, they're actually a rare sight here in Colorado. Instead, denim miniskirts reign - the kind I haven't seen (or worn) since I was about 13 years old.

If I were in Adelaide, this would be the kind of ensemble I might wear to run some quick errands or work a bit around the house. Denim shorts, neutral top, and a little something cozy. But here it's considered extreme if I stray from the all-American aesthetic of bootleg jeans, a jersey top and a pair of thongs. I've never longed for the sight of denim cut-offs before - this is definitely a period of firsts for me. I'm never dissing Adelaideans' fashion sense again.

I've never bought two of the same anything before. It just doesn't resonate with me. I like change, and I get frissons of excitement when I see something out of the ordinary. Which is why it took something extraordinary to persuade me to buy two of the same trousers: one in navy, one in beige. These $5 trousers had a better fit for me than any I've ever tried in my life, which is odd, considering Old Navy is America's equivalent of Jay Jays. Oh well - nothing good comes of rationalisation when I've just found the perfect fit.

Jeanna from Zanerobe sent me this gorgeous knitted dress which I wore as a top. The photo below shows what it really looks like. The hole at the back gives me lots of chances to layer it with lacey body suits underneath. I might even try wearing it front to back with a tube dress underneath.

I hope everyone has had a good weekend. It's Monday again, which I am not very happy about. The only thing I'm looking forward to is the nice 25 degree day in Adelaide this Sunday! Time to show your legs people. Spring is finally here and summer is on the way!

What do I say when I have too much to say? I'm a writer. This should be easy for me. But it isn't, because I have more enthusiasm in me than anybody could possibly handle. Bullet points? I disdain them. They're shoddy.

But I do want to tell you somehow about my life in Fort Collins. I wish I could relay the delight of finding the $10 leather shorts I bought from H&M in San Francisco, and the wonderful Dolce Vita for Target collection, and the beauty of the CSU campus (below), and my favourite two film photographs of San Francisco (bottom two). I wish I could explain what makes the Greek life so unique, and how elated I was when Kappa Kappa Gamma asked me to join their sorority.

To attempt to describe my experience in Colorado so far would be like trying to show you the glory of the Mona Lisa by sketching on a napkin. Have I mentioned that I am obsessed with feathers? I think that's probably one of the reasons why I have this fascination with the native American head dress. I currently have my eye on this navy feathered cape from Asos.

It would be perfect for summer! I can already imagine what I would wear with it. I hope everybody has a really good week. Mine has just been crazy! At the moment, I just wish I could forget everything that has happened and move on. Life brings it's obstacles and when we fall, we just have to pick ourselves up and start walking again.

Unpredictable by its creativity and revolutionary in its style, Mimco's Season 2 2010 collection is not one to disappoint. When they emailed to ask us to showcase a piece from their range and interpret their collection to our wonderful readers, we fell so in love with the range that we couldn't say no. Channelling the tortured elegance of a princess, Coco took to her lens and Amanda to her plumate lashes to capture the romance of an era past.

Tom and I found this place on one of our random drives. We like driving around to no where. It's fun! I've also had this sudden itch to wear more blouses. Vintage blouses to be exact. Ones with nice ruffles or puffy sleeves and preferably in nice earthy or warm tones. I saw the most beautiful warm pink blouse at the Red Cross vintage store on Rundle street. I would have gotten it right away if not for the price I saw on the tag.

I was just saying to a friend the other day that being stylish would be a lot easier if money wasn't an issue. I know there are such things as op shops, but still, how often do you actually come across something that fits perfectly and that actually blows your mind. Most of the stuff I get from op shops have to be reconstructed or altered. Some of you might disagree or agree with me. But please let me know what you think because I hope I'm not the only odd one here! Haha.

As scary as these boots look, they are actually quite comfy. I'm quite excited that winter is almost coming to an end here. I can't wait to break out in shorts and sleeveless tops. I will miss the layering though. Going to try and fit in some layering somehow or rather in the summer months. Aahh! Can't wait!

Oversized cardis are just so easy to pair stuff with. I bought this one for Tom but it was too big for him so I adopted it into my wardrobe. I've been wearing it for the past 4 days. It's awesome!

I also recently went to the launch night of the new Savers Recycle Superstore in Noarlunga. Two days after the opening I went down with some friends and we all got something. One of my purchases included a cut out shoulder blazer thing that reminds me of Dion Lee. I can't wait to wear it! They also have a wide selection of men's leather shoes as well as an assortment of ladies shoes. I would say that it's definitely worth driving down all the way for.

These are the final images from a fun shoot I helped to style recently with Adelaide Fashion Collective. The clothes are the offspring of mine and Selena's wardrobes; I feel like a proud parent when my clothes look that good on other people. While Hanna was doing Erin's makeup and the rest of us were being lazy buggers, Selena was being interviewed by In Daily about AFC: see the results on page 4. Good work all round, kids.

If you've been following us recently, you'd be familiar with the online designer shoe outlet store The Piscean Shoes. Mei also sent me these lovely sandals from Sigerson Morrison's diffusion line - at $190, it's pretty much the cheapest you can get anywhere (they retail for US$295). I think that is otherwise known as Awesome. She'll be stocking labels such as Miu Miu and Salvatore Ferragamo in coming months, and you'll be sure to hear about it from us. We love supporting Adelaide's up-and-coming fashion retailers!

I have been wanting a pair for ages!

In almost every fashion blog I've read of bloggers from the Northern Hemisphere, I've seen someone wearing clogs. I really like them! I've been wanting them ever since I saw them on the Chanel catwalk. It has been almost a year and only now they've started bringing clogs into Australia! It's ridiculous that Australia is one season behind. I guess if we really wanted to get our hands on these we could with online shoe stores such as Solestruck and Nordstrom. But I find that the postage is quite overpriced and I just couldn't bring myself to pay that much.

As Jeffrey Campbell is the only affordable one at the moment, what do you think? Jeffrey Campbell never ceases to amaze me.

Au Haus warming at Distill bar, Adelaide

Let's admit it: fine old Adelaide town doesn't have a whole lot going on outside of festival season. We're children of the summer, and the months between April and October usually suffer from neglect. Silly as it sounds, I don't hit the town a whole lot in winter. Thank goodness, then, for people like Nick, Brad and Marco, who launched Au Haus at Distill as a lovely regular shindig for people who like Super Nintendos, excellent house music and free shots. Who can say no to a faux grass d-floor and a massive bed in the club?! It's more than enough to get me out of the house on a chilly Friday night.

I'll be doing a bit of Haus cleaning again on a Friday night before I leave in August, and if you ever wished you could have gone to an epic house party in high school you should join me. ~~(You may like to watch out for drink-filled condoms soaring across the room.
